Description

2023 marks the 550th anniversary of the birth and the 480th anniversary of the death of the outstanding astronomer, doctor, mathematician, creator of the heliocentric model of the Solar System, Nicolaus Copernicus. This is a great opportunity to present a zinc medal commemorating him.

Medal designed by Wilhelm Below (March 15, 1822 – July 19, 1895), court engraver of Prince Bernard Frederick von Saxe-Meiningen, one of the sealers making stamps for the January Uprising, parishes and church authorities in Wielkopolska. On its silver-plated obverse there is the following sentence: TO MIKOŁAJ COPERNIK ON THE 400th ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTHDAY IN POLAND, YEAR MDCCCXXIII, HONOR BY COUNTRIES, minted BY THE ESTIMATES OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS OF SCIENCES IN POZNAŃ.

Fun fact:

The medal comes from the pre-war collection of coins and medals, donated to the collection of the Museum of the Nowy Sącz Land in 1936 by Roman Szkaradek (8.08.1887 - 18.06.1986) - co-organizer and first custodian of the Nowy Sącz Museum, opened in 1938 at the castle in Nowy Sącz .

The District Museum in Nowy Sącz is currently conducting a project from the Research of Polish War Losses program of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage entitled "The history of the creation and disintegration of the collections of the Museum of the Nowy Sącz Land and the post-war fate of the Museum in Nowy Sącz", in which he will present the history of the creation of the District Museum in Nowy Sącz, its war and post-war fate, the collected collections and the scope of war losses incurred by the institution.
